hello, world

Every blog needs a “Hello, world!” post. I decided it’d be nice to know where “hello, world” style programs started.

Turns out the first “hello, world” program published for the wider world was for Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie’s book The C Programming Language.

This book apparently took its program from an internal memorandum written by Brian Kernighan while at Bell Laboratories. The memorandum, titled Programming in C: A Tutorial, contained this simple example program:

main( )
printf("hello, world\n");

You can read more about this on Wikipedia.

For now, I’m pretty satisfied, and I think this suffices for a “hello, world” post.
